A monthly in depth look at the ECWA performers by Josh Martin
Frederick of Hollywood
by Josh Martin
He's a former ECWA Heavyweight Champion, who took the ECWA by storm, then moved on, reinvented himself, then came back with a new look, new attitude and a game plan to once again become a champion in the promotion. He is Frederick of Hollywood (once known in the promotion as Bone Crusher Fred Sampson). Many individuals in the world of wrestling are having a tough time transitioning from
"pro wrestling" to
"pro wrestling/sports entertainment", but Frederick of Hollywood has had no trouble with his transition. He entered the ECWA a few years ago and with his
"Bone Crushing" strength and tactics, he quickly rose to become the ECWA Mid Atlantic Champion and then the ECWA Heavyweight Champion. He seemed to have it all but critics mentioned that Fred needed a little something extra to add to his persona, something that would really make fans sit up and take notice. He took that to heart and left the ECWA for a few months and ventured out to work on a new persona. He started to change his look and most of all his way of thinking about the industry and what would be most entertaining. After a trip to Hollywood, hiring a press agent, a sit down with a longtime promoter, consultation of family and friends, and most of all a new look,
"Bone Crusher" Fred Sampson transitioned to "FREDERICK of HOLLYWOOD". Today he is still one of the top performers in the ECWA. His new persona seems to be really catching on with the fans and they are sitting up and taking notice of this young performer. Frederick of Hollywood is again on the top of the ECWA rankings and many feel it's a matter of time before he garnishes one of the ECWA titles. He is not only a top performer in the ECWA, but this writer predicts that Frederick will move up to the big leagues one day, it's just a matter of time! I had the opportunity to pose some questions to Frederick of Hollywood. I hope you enjoy.

What made you want to get into wrestling? I've always been a fan of wrestling since the mid 80's and I got into wrestling because I felt I would be good at it. As a teenager, I did my research on many wrestling schools but they were to expensive. To make a long story short, my bosses' uncle worked at a local gym that a current wrestler worked at. He trained at CAMP IWF and he hooked me up with that school and the rest was history.
When did you join the ECWA? Early summer of 2004.
How did you joining the ECWA come about? I was wrestling for Chaotic Wrestling in Massachusetts and ECWA promoter, Jim Kettner, noticed me and invited me down to the ECWA to wrestle.
What do you like about the ECWA? The ECWA is best independent promotion around without a doubt. Its great reputation for making the stars of tomorrow was a place I definitely wanted to call my home. I felt by joining the ECWA it would be a challenge for myself wrestling new talent and developing my character.
What do you think about the ECWA fans? Month after month I notice some of the same faces that attend the ECWA events and I truly appreciate their loyalty for supporting the wrestlers whether they like that particular wrestler or not. At the end of the event I enjoy listening to the feedback from the fans on the show.
What have been your favorite ECWA moments? Winning the ECWA title was a great experience for me that I will never forget. Holding that prestigious trophy such as the ECWA Heavyweight title means you must represent the promotion with honor. I hope one day I'm able to do the same again.

Jim Kettner and I were talking most of the day and he had seen I lost some weight, grew my hair, and had on a nice dress suit. Jim called me a couple weeks later and came up with a new character on his was home from work. We spoke about the character and I'm still in the process of developing Frederick of Hollywood.
What is the Frederick of Hollywood character all about? Frederick of Hollywood is self-centered, know-it-all individual who thinks he's better then everybody. Once called Fred Sampson before leaving the ECWA, came back a different person hailing from Hollywood, Ca. Double G Gus Grand who is Hollywood's press agent currently helps Hollywood with movie rolls, commercials, etc., when he's not beating down the ECWA roster.
Your thoughts on the current state of the wrestling business? I enjoy 80's old school wrestling. I've learned and applied different techniques that aren't even used today. What's old is new again, however times have changed and wrestling has changed to keep the fans interested.
