ECWA Super 8 Tournament Opening Rounds

Rob Eckos defeated Billy Bax – These two great stars have been a tag team in the ECWA known as the Valedictorians for over 4 years. They in fact held the promotion’s Tga Team Titles for an unprecedented 2-1/2 years. With such success as a team, the fans always wondered "which is better Valedictorian" aspect of the bout has been built up for several months in the promotion. Tonight in their first singles meeting ever, we would find out. They started the match pretty even, each gaining no real advantage over the other. Both keeping their composure we did see Bax become the aggressor as he knocked Eckos off the apron, then he did a dive to the floor. They then battled on the ring apron. Bax dove off the apron to the floor again onto Eckos, but was hit with a superkick by Eckos. Bax would come back with a near pin fall after delivering a sitdown Tigerdriver on Eckos. Bax reversed a flying body press for another two count. Bax then gave Rob Eckos a German suplex for another near pin. Eckos was able to hit an enziguiri for a quick 2 count of his own. Rob Eckos spit on Bax, which enraged Bax to go into an angry flurry of offense of viscious punches and kicks Coming off a whip in the corner Bax cut him off on a charge into the corner, set up Eckos, then did a top rope frankensteiner which Bax was able to reverse into a power bomb which Eckos caught him in a front roll for pin.

Matt Logan defeated Rob Conway – At the beginning, the veteran Rob Conway was easily controlling the pace and Matt Logan, although it was clear to see that the local fans were solidly behind Matt. Then Logan almost scored an early win with a frankensteiner. Conway went out to the floor the to stall break Logan’s momentum. Conway returned to the ring and teased a test of strength, but when Logan put his hand up, he chopped and punched Logan. They went to the floor, where Logan fired back with chops of his own. Back in the ring, Rob Conway executed a reverse clothesline but Logan got his feet on ropes to avoid the pin. Although becoming frustrated, Conway kept trying to finish Logan off but couldn't get the pin. Logan then did a Fall Away Slam. Matt Logan did a sunset flip and then a series of dropkicks. Conway nearly kicked out of a Michinoku Driver. Logan missed a flying body press and was speared by Conway. Rob went for the Jackhammer but Logan rolled him into a small package for the surprise win.

Jerry Lynn defeated Brian Fury - They started on the mat exchanging arm bars and other back and forth reversals. They were very cautious to avoid each others moves. Fury worked over Lynn's arm following a hammerlock body slam. Fury picked up Lynn for an atomic drop, then slammed him down face first onto the corner buckle. As Lynn snapped back, he was caught with a back suplex. Lynn came back with a legdrop while Fury was caught in the ropes. Lynn did a springboard dropkick off the middle rope to Fury who was on the apron, then did a flip dive off the apron to the floor. Once back in the ring Jerry Lynn continued working Fury’s arm. Fury eventually gained control and continued to work over Lynn which included a power bomb into a bridge pin attempt. Lynn then applied an arm bar but Fury made it to the ropes. Fury went for a pile driver but it was reversed into an Emerald Frosion. Lynn went for a cradle piled river but Fury escaped and they went into a bridge and backslide sequence. Lynn speared Fury and then executed a cradle pile driver for the pin.

Sonjay Dutt defeated Human Tornado by submission - The crowd loved Tornado's persona and break dancing offense in the match. They did comedy early early in the bout which included Sonjay Dutt trying to jump up to reach the much taller Tornado's hand to do a test of strength. Tornado slammed Dutt off the top but he landed on his feet. Sonjay did a Lionsault for near fall. Dutt then hit an Arabian Press for another near pin. Sonjay caught Tornado with a clothesline with a 360. Dutt scissored Tornado with his legs. The crowd got behind Tornado to fight his way out. Human Tornado came back with kick and splash moves. Tornado tried a DDT but was shoved away and then he kicked Sonjay many times taking time to deliver his entertaining dancing between kicks. Dutt then gave him a reverse Diamondust for a near pin. Sonjay Dutt delivered an Ace Crusher and applied the camel cluch for the submission.

At the close of the opening rounds fans were buzzing about the 4 matches and how different each one was, especially as competitive, tournament style match ups. The Valedictorians (Bax & Eckos) with the story of which member of the team was better. You had Conway as the veteran who was basically outsmarted by the younger Logan. Then there was the technical wrestling match of Lynn vs. Fury. Then Tornado against Dutt would give a nice blend of comedy and high spots. Each match different, each match telling a story, each match entertaining!!!

Ring announcer Joel Oresky then called for a 15 minute intermission…

ECWA Super 8 Tournament Semi-Final Rounds

Sonay Dutt pinned Rob Eckos - It was a great back and forth match up which looked as though it could have gone either way. Both men wanting to advance to the finals, held nothing back during this semi final round. Fans were split as to who to root for in this particular match. The finish came when Sonjay Dutt pinned Rob Eckos with a 450 splash from the top.

Jerry Lynn pinned Matt Logan – Matt Logan, being the local favorite go the support of the crowd. Matt delivered a frankensteiner which saw Jerry Lynn came back with a tilt the world backbreaker and then a bow and arrow. Lynn missed a guillotine leg drop and Logan gave him a top rope flying body press for a close 2 count. Lynn then did a back suplex but Logan got his shoulder up. Lynn then delivered a top rope frankensteiner. Matt Logan fired back with a spine buster but in the end the veteran Lynn used a cradle pile driver for the pin fall.

Prince Nana won the Annual ECWA Summit Royal Rumble. This featured all of the ECWA regulars. Involved were Freak Nasty, Ace Darling, Mr. Ooh La La, J.J. the Crew Guy, Sean Royal, Kermon the German, Mr. Scott Wright, Max Von Bauer, Mike Tobin, Mozart Fontaine, Brian Soscia, Glen Osbourne, Bryan Logan. Frederick of Hollywood, Guy with Red Hair, Hot Shot Mike Reed, Dan Eckos, Mega, Chase Del Monte, the masked El’ Trouble, J.J. Cruz, Corey Blaze, Jason Leigh, Alec Chance, Timothy Richards, Gus Grand, and Jim Shorts. Prince Nana was last man to enter and tossed the two "final" competitors, Freak Nastty & J.J. Crew Guy out of the ring. Nana, who is also owner of ECWA’s parent Company RGN, did some mic work about running the company and got a lot of heat from the crowd. Nana said the next time he came back, everyone was too get on their hands and knees to show respect to him. You had the feeling that some of the audience wanted to kill him. The Summit saw some interesting stories develop and continue. The Heavyweights gained an ounce of retribution over Jim Shorts for turning against them recently. Mr. Wright and Glen Osbourne would continue to mix it up and Osbourne would go nuts on Mr. Ooh La La, chopping the French star all over the arena. The Chick Magnets would work together for a little revenge against the ECWA’s giant Mega. In an interesting twist, Frederick of Hollywood would be betrayed and thrown over the top rope by his longtime partner, Hot Shot Mike Reed. And the faction leaders Freak Nastty of the Freak Faction and J.J. Crew Guy, Cheetah’s top guy in the Master Brand battled until surprised by Prince Nana, who is the owner and has no time of day for either faction. All the wrestlers had to hold J.J. Crew Guy and Freak Nastty back from killing Nana and risk being fired. It was an exciting match with plenty of great action.
